Charlie's Reading Milestone

Although I don't have many photos to show for it, there's one thing I want to remember: Charlie's reading milestone. Last year, Charlie's school did a reading program that required them to read 250 books on their own over the school year. Essentially, one to two every school day.

The first semester was rough. It was very difficult to get him to read because he'd get frustrated with how slow of a reader he was. Charlie's personality is that he wants to be able to instantly master whatever he tries to do. If he can't, he gets very upset, cries, throws a temper tantrum...(he has his mother's patience, God bless him!!) So day after day this went on. Eventually I let it slack a bit because it was so tough on him.

But then in February sometime, he just seemed to "get it." All of a sudden, he could read well and quickly! It reminds me of how we struggled with potty training when he was 2-3 years old. Once he hit his stride, he tried so hard to catch up on the reading goal. He was reading 3-5 books a day sometimes. But, alas, I misunderstood the deadline. I thought it was the last day of school, but it was actually 2 weeks prior. So he didn't make his goal. :( But he came very close, and I am so proud of him!

Okay, so I came over to read this one. :) That's so wonderful! It's great to hear because C's 1st grade teacher showed us what they're supposed to be reading at the end of 1st grade, and I thought, wow! It takes him a while, and he tends to get frustrated also but I know he'll get there. Thanks for sharing! Yay, Charlie!!
